Italy continues to be a favourite destination from international markets: the number of passengers arriving on Alitalia flights since the beginning of 2014 has increased.

31,000 more passengers (+ 3.6%) compared to 2013. A vital contribution from South America (+ 11%); from Europe and the Middle East (+ 6%) and from North America (+3.3%).

Rome, 10 March 2014 – From the beginning of 2014, the number of overseas visitors arriving in Italy with Alitalia for tourist or business reasons has increased.

Compared to the first months of 2013, Alitalia saw an increase of 3.6% in the number of passengers flying on board its aircraft into Italy from overseas - equal to 31,000 more passengers – which confirms our country as a tourist destination internationally sought after.  The increase in the flow of traffic to Italy shows that, since the beginning of this year, the ‘business’ motivated traffic is on the rebound.

Rome, Milan, the cities of art (especially Florence and Venice) and southern Italy remain popular destinations for foreign visitors.

South America is the area of the world which has contributed the most to the increase in overseas traffic with an increase in the number of passengers of 11% and an increase in revenue on Alitalia flights from South America to Italy equal to almost 58%, compared to 2013.  Alitalia connects three South American countries with Rome: Brazil (Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo), Argentina (Buenos Aires) and Venezuela (Caracas).

Also important is the contribution made by Europe and by the Middle East: there has been a 6% increase in the number of passengers compared to 2013 from these two areas.  During the summer season, from 30 March 2014, the Alitalia Group plans to operate 62 medium range services to these markets.

There is also an increase in traffic from North America to Italy, +3.3% in the number of passengers compared to 2013.  This is also the area where the highest load factor in high yield classes on long haul flights – Magnifica business class and Classica Plus premium economy – has been achieved; a sign that business traffic has started to recover and more passengers are choosing to fly with Alitalia.  On flights between North America and Italy in 2014, the number of passengers travelling in Magnifica class rose by 6.4 percentage point compared with the previous year, whilst Classica Plus recorded an increase of 7.4 percentage points.  Alitalia connects Canada (Toronto) and the United States (flights from Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami and New York JFK) with Italy.

As a result of these figures, which confirm a growth in both international and intercontinental routes, the Industrial Plan of the Group forecasts an additional boost in revenue deriving from these overseas activities, with the goal of making Alitalia one of the leading Italian companies to contribute to the Italian economy.
